Netflix: “One Piece” starts successfully and breaks record

Don't miss

A few days ago, the hotly anticipated live-action adaptation of “One Piece” appeared on Netflix – to much praise and great success. We summarize.

Fans are thrilled

Even though live-action adaptations of anime or manga often fall short of expectations and enjoy an extremely poor reputation in fan circles, Netflix dared to take on one of the world’s most popular manga titles with “One Piece.” And this despite the fact that the streaming giant had already failed several times with “Cowboy Bebop” and “Death Note” not so long ago.

But “One Piece” was supposed to put an end to this trend once and for all, which is why Netflix spared neither money nor effort and even brought manga creator Eiichiro Oda on board, who actively participated in the production. And the result is more than respectable.

“One Piece” fans around the world are thrilled and praise in particular the faithfulness to the original and the love with which the work was adapted. Quite a few even find the live-action adaptation better than the anime, which has been regularly criticized for its animation quality and pacing since the beginning. Quite the opposite of the Netflix adaptation.

There, all episodes of the eight-part series are entertaining and fly by, even though they actually have a running time of just under an hour each. And before you know it, you’re looking at the credits of the last episode and longing for a second season, which, according to the makers, should only be a matter of time if it’s successful.

Successful start

A good indicator of success is, of course, the feedback from fans. Usually we find ourselves for this in our articles on MyAnimeList, but there we can search for a long time for the Netflix adaptation of “One Piece”. Much better suited in this case are the US review portals IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes, and of course the Netflix Global Charts.

And there, after four days since its worldwide release on August 31, 2023, the live-action adaptation of “One Piece” can look back on a very successful start. While IMDb lists the series with 8.5 out of 10 points, Rotten Tomatoes even gives it an audience score of 96%. Both are very good scores, and those responsible can be proud of them.

But while such ratings are often influenced by the opinion of many fans or even haters, the actual streaming figures cannot be deceived. And there, on the third day after its release, “One Piece” was enthroned in 84 countries on the first place of the most streamed series on Netflix – a new record.

Previously, only “Wednesday” and the fourth season of “Stranger Things” were able to reach first place in the series charts in 83 countries at the same time. Even if it was only enough for first place in 82 countries on the fourth day, the series has already made history.

But now it’s your turn: Have you seen the live-action adaptation of “One Piece” yet and what do you think of the extremely positive ratings? Let us know in the comments!
