The anime and manga adaptation “One Piece” was a huge success for Netflix last year. No wonder the streaming service promptly commissioned further episodes. However, fans of Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) and co. will have to be patient before the live-action flying lamb sets sail again: “One Piece” season 2 will not be released until late summer 2025. In it, we can expect the Alabsta saga, the first really big adventure on the Grandline.
The Straw Hat Gang will have to deal with the Baroque Company, a criminal secret organization whose big goal puts them on a direct confrontation course with Luffy and co. Fans will be particularly excited to see how the most powerful agents of the Baroque company are portrayed, who almost always come in pairs: The men wear numbers – the lower the number, the more powerful the person – while the women fighting alongside them are named after holidays.
With four agents, we no longer need to think about who will play them, as Netflix has revealed the casts via Instagram:
Marvel star becomes Mr. 3
Mr. 3, the most powerful person in the quartet, is likely to stand out and is also fittingly played by the most famous actor: David Dastmalchian. Marvel fans know him as Kurt from the first two “Ant-Man” films, but the actor has blossomed into a man for special roles in a number of Hollywood titles in recent years. For example, he also appeared as Polka-Dot Man in “The Suicide Squad”, as Mentat Piter de Vries in “Dune” and was also seen in “Oppenheimer” and “Blade Runner 2049”. Recently, he was also able to promote himself as the lead actor in the horror film “Late Night with the Devil”.
“One Piece” has therefore gained a promising and interesting actor in him, who should bring Mr. 3 to life with the necessary special touch. The Baroque agent is a calculating, methodical villain who also comes across as somewhat snobbish. Thanks to his devilish powers, he can create wax from his body and use it to create all kinds of dangerous and practical weapons and devices.
Also not to be underestimated is Mr. 5, who is played by Camrus Johnson in the Netflix series. The Batwing actor from the series “Batwoman” can show off some truly impressive devil power: Mr. 5 can make all parts of his body explode, though of course he himself is under no threat of harm. And really all parts: For example, the agent likes to flick his boogers at his opponents*, turning them into powerful bombs.
Miss Valentine acts alongside Mr. 5, with Jazzara Jaslyn (“Warrior”) playing her part. Thanks to her devil power, Miss Valentine can change her body weight practically at will. She likes to use this in combination: first she makes herself very light to rise into the air with her umbrella and as soon as she is above her target, she becomes tons of weight to hurtle down on her opponents and crush them.
The quartet is completed by Mr. 9, who will be played by Daniel Lasker (“Raised by Wolves”). Remember the rule “the lower the number, the more powerful the person”? Well, Mr. 9 has at least made it far enough in the Baroque company to become a numbers agent, but he hardly poses any real threat to the Straw Hat Gang. He may be acrobatic and fight with two metal clubs, but he has no devil power and falls well short of Mr. 5 and Mr. 3.
In light of these revelations, fans are guaranteed to be excited to see who will play the other agents, with Agent 0 aka Sir Crocodile, Mr. 2, Miss Bloody Sunday aka Nico Robin and Miss Wednesday aka Nefeltari Vivi likely to be of most interest to those who already know the rest of the story. The current cast shows once again that the Netflix series does not shy away from giving lesser-known actors and actresses a chance. As long as the characters are brought to life according to the original, fans certainly won’t mind, given the success of season 1; the main thing is that Jamie Lee Curtis will play Dr. Kureha as requested.
