The second season of “Shadow and Bone” has been available on Netflix for several months now. Most fans have probably already seen the continuation of the story about the powers of Grisha and are wondering whether there will be a third season. Netflix has now commented on this.
There will be no season 3 of the series. Find out why the streaming service has canceled “Shadow and Bone” after just two seasons in this article.
Why there will be no third season of “Shadow and Bone”
A big disappointment for everyone who was hoping for a sequel to “Shadow and Bone“: Netflix has officially canceled the series.
This comes as a surprise, as “Shadow and Bone” is based on two different book series by author Leigh Bardugo and was pitched by showrunner Eric Heisserer directly as a three-season plan. Netflix explains why there will now be no further season of “Shadow and Bone”, partly due to the lower success of season 2, which was not enough to cover the production costs. But the streaming service also blames the strike, which paralyzed film production in the USA for months.
Author Leigh Bardugo expressed her sadness on Instagram and thanked her fans. Their loyalty is also evident in a petition. Almost 200,000 people (as of December 2023) have signed “Save Shadow and Bone”.
When will season 3 of “Shadow and Bone” start on Netflix?
There will be no third season, which is why no release date can be given.
“Shadow and Bone”: What could season 3 have been about?
Attention! Spoilers for season 2 of “Shadow and Bone” follow
The Shadow Corridor is destroyed at the end of season 2 of “Shadow and Bone”, but the story is far from over, as new challenges, problems and tasks arise for the characters as a result of the events. The changes in the second season go beyond the plot of the novel, which is why it is unclear in many places in which direction the story will develop.
What is clear, however, is that unlike in the book, Mal and Alina’s story is not yet finished after the destruction of the Shadow Hallway. The use of Merzost has awakened dark powers in Alina and she will have to come to terms with her new identity as a Shadow Summoner, while Mal goes on a journey as a new Stormhound to search for meaning and find out whether the connection to Alina was genuine or caused by his characteristics as a power multiplier. So it remains exciting to see whether the two will find each other again.
Book fans also know that the Grisha drug is both devastating and highly sought after, which is why some parties pay a lot of money for it. This eventually leads the crows on an almost impossible raid that takes them to the Ice Court. As Drüskelle, Matthias Helvar, who is still in Hellmouth Prison in season 2, is crucial to this mission, which is why it can be assumed that the Crows will free him from prison first.
