The Norwegian series “Christmas at Home” became a surprising success on Netflix. Since 2019, protagonist Johanne has been capturing the hearts of viewers. Every year, the story of the young nurse draws fans back to their screens at Christmas time. They have been hoping for a sequel for three years, but will there still be a season 3?
We have researched whether new episodes are realistic. Here we tell you why it unfortunately looks bad.
Will “Christmas at Home” continue with season 3?
The second season of “Hjem til jul”, as the series is originally called, was released in December 2020 and ended with a fulfilling moment for many fans. Nevertheless, they would like to see more stories about Johanne and Jonas.
But they won’t be coming. As the Norwegian magazine Elle reports, Netflix has confirmed that there will be no third season. In addition, the makers are said to feel that they have rounded off the story.
Only lead actress Ida Elise Broch wants a sequel. In an interview, she affirmed that she is fighting for another season every day. The success of the series would also actually speak in favour of this. Both seasons have remained in the top 10 charts for a long time and have reappeared every year in the run-up to Christmas since their release.
It remains to be seen whether Netflix will change its mind. In any case, success would be assured.
No season 3, but remake “I Hate Christmas”
For all fans of the mini-series, there is at least one alternative. In 2022, Netflix released the Italian series “I Hate Christmas“. It’s about the nurse Gianna, who lies to her family about having a boyfriend before Christmas. Does the storyline remind you of anything? Exactly.
Although the remake can’t keep up with the original, it has been continued with a second season, which has been online on the streaming service since the beginning of December 2023. However, the plot has been changed more significantly this time. However, another sequel is still questionable at the moment.
“A storm at Christmas” instead of “Christmas at Home”
However, there is another alternative for fans of “Christmas at Home”. Some of the actors and actresses from the series can also be seen in “A Storm at Christmas“, another Norwegian mini-series. The cast includes Ida Elisa Broch (Johanne), Dennis Storhoi (Tor) and Line Verndal (Eira).
In the series, very different people arrive at Oslo airport. Some of them want to meet their loved ones, some want to travel home to their families and others want to get on a plane to escape the holidays. But their Christmas plans are turned upside down by a storm and everyone is stranded at the airport…
How could “Christmas at Home” continue?
The second season ends with a happy ending for Johanne and Jonas. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t still plenty to tell.
The big age difference between the two could be addressed, for example, but a pregnancy would also be conceivable. The stories of the other characters could also be spun out further: What happens with John’s parents? How does Jorgunn fare in Spain? Oh yes, there is certainly enough material for a sequel.
