Firmware Update for AirPods 3 Released

Apple has released an over-the-air firmware update for the third generation AirPods. The update brings the firmware version to 6A321, up from the previous version 6A317, which was introduced last December.

Apple has not revealed any details about the changes or improvements in this latest firmware update. Apple rarely shares details about incremental AirPods firmware releases, so it remains unclear whether this update includes new features or performance improvements.

To check the current firmware version of the AirPods, users need to connect them to their iPhone or other iOS device. They can then open the “Settings” app and select “Info” under “General”. There, the “AirPods” option can be called up and the firmware number displayed.

If the AirPods are not on the latest firmware 6A321, there are some steps to update them:

  • Place your AirPods in the case and plug them in.
  • Place the AirPods in the case near your iPhone and open the lid.
  • Go to the Bluetooth settings on your iPhone and select your AirPods to connect them.
  • Leave your AirPods connected to your iPhone for up to 10 minutes. This will force the over-the-air firmware update.

The new firmware 6A321 will be installed automatically as long as your AirPods are charged and near your iPhone. As with all AirPods firmware updates, the installation will take place in the background, so you will not see that an update is taking place.
